A pre-existing covered anaerobic lagoon (CAL) at a red meat abattoir was studied by Finn Biogas to understand and improve its operation. The project team collected long-term data from the plant and undertook an analysis of biological health to understand where process improvements could be made to increase process stability, smooth out biogas production rates and maximise return on investment.

The team’s findings showed that significant improvements in biogas production could be made with some relatively small changes to process design and plant operation.
